POTSDAM, Germany, April 28 (UPI) -- German police may have the wrong suspects in their search for the attackers of a black German, who was beaten nearly to death over the Easter holiday.
One of the two suspects who were detained just a few days after the attack was thought to be a well-known German neo-Nazi nicknamed 'Hitler.'
Although the detained suspect looks like 'Hitler' and carries the same name, a police official told Friday's Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper they had the "wrong guy."
Contrary to earlier assumptions, the two suspects, who deny involvment, have no right-wing background, officials said.
Meanwhile, the condition of the victim, 37-year-old Ermyas Mulugeta, has improved and become stable, according to doctors.
Mulugeta, a German of Ethiopian descent, works as a scientist at a research institute in Potsdam, a city near Berlin.
While he was beaten, he called his wife; her phone's answering machine recorded roughly 80 seconds of the attack, and the perpetrators' voices can be heard.
Police had published the recording on a Web site, hoping for clues from the public.
