India, Pakistan talk nuclear weapons

NEW DELHI, April 26 (UPI) -- India and Pakistan have discussed measures to reduce the risk of the accidental use of nuclear weapons.

The Hindu newspaper said Wednesday that on the opening day of the three-day talks on nuclear and conventional confidence-building measures, the focus was on the draft agreement India submitted to Pakistan last August, at the last round of talks on the nuclear risk reduction mechanism.

"India's delegation was led by K.C. Singh, secretary for international organizations, and Tariq Osman Haider headed the Pakistani side," said a Pakistani foreign office spokeswoman.

According to the Pakistani foreign office, both India and Pakistan have agreed in principle to devise a mechanism for nuclear risk reduction.

"The Indian proposal is in accordance with the understanding between the two sides in February 1999," the Pakistani spokeswoman said, adding that there were a number of logistical and legal issues that remained to be hammered out before any pact could be formally signed.

"We are going in the right direction," she said.

Talks between the two sides are scheduled to continue throughout Wednesday and for much of the week. "On the final day the two sides would focus attention on conventional confidence-building measures," she concluded.
