Rice greeted by violent protests in Athens

ATHENS, Greece, April 25 (UPI) -- Greek police on Tuesday fired tear gas at protestors who caused havoc in Athens in the wake of a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Roughly 3,000 people protested for peace and against globalization in downtown Athens while Rice met with Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakojannis.

Some tried to break a police ring surrounding the building where the two leaders met; police met the attempt by firing tear gas into the crowd, the BBC reported. Protesters hurled petrol bombs and stones in return.

Rice will also meet with Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and later travel to Bulgaria and Turkey.

In a briefing to reporters en route to Greece, Rice said she would discuss peacekeeping efforts in the Balkans, the future of the divided island of Cyprus and common anti-terrorism policies.

Anti-war protests have marred Rice's recent trip to the north-western United Kingdom.
