Iran: Iraqis must end U.S. occupation

TEHRAN, April 24 (UPI) -- Ranking Iranian National Security Council member Hassan Rohani said Iraq's biggest challenge will be to drive foreign occupants out of the country.

"It is most regretful that no timetable for the withdrawal of these forces has been fixed yet," Rohani said over the weekend at an international conference on developments in Iraq and their regional dimensions.

"If the occupants get out of Iraq quickly and cease their interference in its internal affairs, stability will be restored to Iraq and the whole region," Rohani was quoted as saying by the Iranian News Agency, IRNA.

Rohani stressed that the security problem in Iraq "is the second biggest challenge in a country where no place is safe anymore."

"Although the occupants should be responsible for security in Iraq, the Americans cannot care less about that and they only think about guaranteeing their own safety and that of their bases and barracks," he said.

He charged that the Americans are the least concerned about the killing of Shiites and Sunnis or Kurds.

"The destruction of sacred sites and the killing of young police forces does not concern the American forces," Rohani said. "The main problem facing Iraq is the presence of foreign occupants which has become a motive for Iraqis to resort to violence."

He also accused the Americans of preventing the Iraqi authorities from taking control of domestic security.
