Iraqi expatriates to vote in 15 countries

AMMAN, Jordan, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Iraqi election officials said Sunday that polling stations have been set up in 15 countries for eligible Iraqi expatriate voters to cast their ballots.

The head of the Iraqi Expatriate Election Committee, Hamida Husseini, told reporters in the Jordanian capital, Amman, that a total of 557 polling stations have been prepared in 47 cities.

She said expatriates will be able to register and cast their ballots on Dec. 13-15 for the new 275-seat Iraqi Parliament.

Husseini added that $42 million have been allocated for this month's elections outside Iraq, compared to $92 million spent on last January's parliamentary polls.

She said that Iran alone set up 16 polling stations in eight of its cities.

In addition to Iran, Iraqis will also be able to vote in Jordan, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Syria, Turkey, Australia, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Britain, Canada and the United States.

The official said 12 stations were set up in three cities in Jordan, most of them in the capital, Amman, where an estimated 350,000 eligible voters live out of a total of 500,000 Iraqis in the kingdom.

People in Iraq will go to the polls on Dec. 15 amid tight security measures to choose from 400 political lists, including more than 7,000 candidates.
