Female bombers kill 30 at police academy

BAGHDAD, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Violence in Iraq claimed the lives of 30 people Tuesday, mostly police officers and cadets at the police academy in Baghdad.

Police said two female suicide bombers detonated their explosives-rigged belts inside a classroom in the academy, killing 30 and injuring 35.

The suicide bombers were apparently students at the academy, which is why they were not searched.

Women are not always subject to the same stringent security checks as men in the largely conservative country where it is deemed inappropriate for male guards to frisk women or girls.

The latest incident of violence in war-torn Iraq came nine days before the general elections, due to be held Dec. 15.

Police also said Tuesday they discovered 11 bodies of handcuffed men wearing civilian clothes on the highway between Baghdad and the Jordanian border near the town of Ratba in the province of Anbar west of Iraq.

The victims were apparently killed three days ago, according to police.

In another development, an Iraqi criminal court sentenced a Tunisian citizen to death after convicting him of responsibility for an explosion that took place a month ago in Jadiriya in central Baghdad.
