LOS ANGELES, June 28 (UPI) -- "Hannibal" show-runner Bryan Fuller says he has asked British music icon David Bowie to play Hannibal Lecter's uncle in Season 2 of the Baltimore crime drama.

"We have reached out to David Bowie to see if he's interested and available," Fuller told E! News. "We would love for him to play Hannibal's uncle, who is a character from the literature and in the books. ... We don't have an answer yet."

Fuller said he is hopeful Bowie will play Count Robert Lecter on the NBC series, which resumes production in August in Toronto.

He went on to say he and the writers are working on a different way to introduce Hannibal's uncle on the show since Robert was killed by Nazis in Thomas Harris' series of books.

"Since our timeline is a little more present, there's a little bit of J.J. Abrams-style, alternate universe storytelling where he could still be alive," Fuller said, referring to the creator of the time-skipping supernatural drama "Lost."

Mads Mikkelsen plays the title character in "Hannibal," a brilliant psychiatrist, secret serial killer and cannibal, who helps Laurence Fishburne's unsuspecting FBI agent Jack Crawford and Hugh Dancy's profiler Will Graham solve difficult homicides.

Season 1 wrapped up this month with Will admitted as a patient to the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane after Hannibal makes it look like he's the killer the FBI has been chasing.

E! said Season 2 will be about Will trying to prove his innocence for the crimes Hannibal committed.
