NEW YORK, July 2 (UPI) -- U.S. actor Taylor Lautner says it isn't his idea to be frequently filmed and photographed without a shirt.

Lautner is one of the stars of the popular "Twilight Saga" movies. He appeared on Thursday's edition of "Late Show with David Letterman" to promote the latest installment in the franchise, "Eclipse."

"Was that your idea?" Letterman asked Lautner, holding up a GQ magazine cover on which the 18-year-old actor is posing shirtless.

"No, it wasn't," Lautner laughed. "No, it's the ('Twilight') books... He's a werewolf, and when you transform into a werewolf, apparently all your clothes tear off."

"Well, I can see that," Letterman teased.

"So, I mean, when they tear off," Lautner continued, "you're left with nothing, but out of courtesy we pack little jeans shorts throughout the forest and we throw those on."

"Yeah, that's right," Letterman quipped, "because you don't want to make a fool of yourself."
