OSLO, Norway, May 30 (UPI) -- Germany scored an upset win in this year's Eurovision Song Contest that had only 25 countries participating in the scaled-down event blamed on economics.
The German entrant, a song called "Satellite" by a 19-year-old who goes by the name Lena, was named the winner in Oslo, Norway, Saturday night with 246 points, the BBC reported. She is only the second winner from Germany in Eurovision's 55-year history, the BBC noted.
"I think it's unreal," she said backstage. "This is such a big thing that I'm just completely freaking out!"
Oddsmakers had chosen Safura from Azerbaijan to win the contest, the BBC said. European voters, however, gave second place to Turkey followed by Romania then Denmark. Great Britain's entrant, Josh Dubovie, came in last.
The BBC said the economy forced several countries to pull out of this year's competition.
