His memorial service is to take place March 16 at Central Church of God in Charlotte, N.C., CNN said.

Ellis is best known for his work with the 1970s-era, Philadelphia-based group the Trammps, who sang the dance anthem "Disco Inferno," which appeared on the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack. Their other hits include "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart," "Hold Back the Night" and "That's Where the Happy People Go."

"The Trammps' prowess can't be measured by chart popularity. Ellis' booming, joyous vocals brilliantly championed the celebratory fervor and atmosphere that made disco both loved and hated among music fans," said the group's biography on allmusic.com.
