'Stargate' creators announce plans for reboot trilogy

LOS ANGELES, June 20 (UPI) -- Stargate is the latest '90s movie to receive a reboot.

Franchise creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, who directed the 1994 film, announced plans for a reboot trilogy in an interview with Variety.

Emmerich and Devlin confirmed work is underway on the first movie in the envisioned trilogy. The pair had intended to release sequels to the original Stargate but "never got to do parts two and three."

"It's not a story that can take place 20 years later," Devlin said. "So the only way to really tell that trilogy is to go back from the beginning and start the story all over again."

Stargate earned over $196 million at the box office and inspired three TV series, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe. Emmerich and Devlin were not involved with the TV adaptations.

"It was taken away from us, and it's tough to have your children raised by other parents, even if they do a very good job," Devlin said. "For us, it's not putting down what has been done. It's to let us finish telling our story."

Emmerich and Devlin are also known for creating the 1996 film Independence Day. The duo will try their luck with the sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, which stars Liam Hemsworth and opens in theaters Friday.

"This Friday, it's finally here! Took us 20 years to make but Independence Day: Resurgence has finally arrived!" Devlin wrote Sunday on Instagram.

Stargate starred Kurt Russell and James Spader, with Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks as the leads of Stargate SG-1. MGM, who produced the original movie, will co-produce the reboot with Warner Bros.
