Spotlight and Beasts of No Nation followed close behind with five nods apiece.
The winners of the Spirit Awards -- which honor excellence in low-budget film -- are to be announced Feb. 27 on Santa Monica Beach. The low-key prize presentation traditionally takes place on the eve of the glitzy Oscars ceremony.
