LOS ANGELES, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Matthew McConaughey may star in the forthcoming adaptation of Stephen King series The Dark Tower.

The 46-year-old actor is reportedly in talks to play either protagonist Roland Deschain or the antagonist Man in Black. The movie would draw primarily from the first book in the series, The Gunslinger, which was published in 1982.

A Beautiful Mind writer Akiva Goldsman and Lost executive producer Jeff Pinkner will pen the script, with A Royal Affair helmer Nikolaj Arcel as director. Sequel films and a television series are already being planned at Sony and MRC.

The Dark Tower follows Deschain, the last of a knightly order known as "gunslingers," as he searches for the fabled Dark Tower. King expressed his excitement over a dual movie and TV adaptation in an interview with MTV last year.

"I love it because it's so innovative," the author said. "The idea of using the front story as theatrical tent pole movies, and using the back story of when the characters are a bit younger as a TV thing. To be able to shoot both at the same time ... it's a very innovative idea."

McConaughey portrayed Det. Rust Cohle on True Detective Season 1 in 2014, and last starred in Interstellar with Anne Hathaway. He is slated for The Sea of Trees with Naomi Watts and The Free State of Jones with Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
