LOS ANGELES, April 21 (UPI) -- Emma Stone has joined the cast of Battle of the Sexes.

The film will see the 26-year-old actress reunite with Crazy Stupid Love (2011) co-star Steve Carell, according to Deadline. Stone will portray real-life tennis star Billie Jean King, who beat arrogant but aging player Bobby Riggs (Carell) in a much-hyped match in 1973.

Battle of the Sexes is in development at Fox Searchlight and will begin production in the fall. Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty, Slumdog Millionaire) wrote the script, with Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) as directors.

The movie is slated for release in 2016, and will contend with two rival projects about the tennis stars. HBO has a film in the works with Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti as stars, while Chernin Entertainment is developing Match Maker with Will Ferrell as Riggs.
