River Phoenix's last film being re-edited

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Dutch director George Sluizer says he plans to finish the late U.S. actor River Phoenix's last movie "Dark Blood" for release next year.

Phoenix was shooting the film when he died in 1993 outside the Viper Room in Los Angeles.

Sluizer told The Hollywood Reporter he has re-edited the original "Dark Blood" footage and hopes to deliver a final cut of the film for release in 2012. He said he plans to ask Phoenix's brother Joaquin Phoenix to do the film's voice-over as River's character Boy.

"The voices of both brothers are very much alike," the director told the Reporter.

In the film, 23-year-old River Phoenix plays a hermit living in the desert on a nuclear testing site as he waits for the end of the world. The film also stars Judy Davis and Jonathan Pryce.

Dutch-based Eyeworks, which is working with Sluizer, said the title of the film may need to be changed due to copyright claims, the industry newspaper said Thursday.
