NEW YORK, July 15 (UPI) -- Leslie Jones, breakout star of the new Ghostbusters remake, tearfully thanked Whoopi Goldberg for paving the way.

Jones was a guest on Thursday's episode of The View and took a moment out of talking about comedy and fashion to thank Whoopi being someone she could emulate.

"The day that I saw Whoopi Goldberg on television, I cried so hard," Jones said. "I kept looking at my daddy going, 'Oh my god. there's somebody on TV that looks like me!'"

Jones fought back tears and she told Whoopi how that moment changed her life and how she's now thankful to be able to pay it forward to young Ghostbusters fans.

"I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart," she said. "Because now I know what I'm doing that when I put on that Ghostbusters suit, and little girls see me on TV now, now they're gonna go, I can do it. You gave that to me, and I love you...and I love you for what you've done for black women, I love you for what you've done for black comedians, and I love you."

Jones also told People Magazine this week about how she learned to embrace her six-foot frame.

"It took me a while, but I'm totally into it now," she said. "I wear 6-inch heels."

Jones stars alongside Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Kate McKinnon in the remake of the classic film Ghostbusters, in theaters Friday.
