NORTHAMPTON, England, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- British actress Judy Carne has died at Northampton General Hospital in her hometown after a bout with pneumonia. She was 76.

Best known for her catchphrase "Sock It to Me" on the 1960s and '70s TV comedy series Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, she also appeared on the shows Gidget, I Dream of Jeannie, Bonanza, Fair Exchange, The Baileys of Balboa, Love on a Rooftop and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Her film credits include A Pair of Briefs and The Americanization of Emily.

Carne was married to actor Burt Reynolds 1963-65 and to producer Robert Bergmann 1970-71. Both marriages ended in divorce and she had no children.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Carne's death, which was first announced on Facebook by her cousin Marnie Butcher.

Carne's once-bright career was eclipsed in the late 1970s when her addiction to drugs led to numerous brushes with the law. She returned home to Northampton after she broke her neck in a near-fatal car crash.

Carne chronicled her triumphs and tribulations in a 1985 autobiography, Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside: The Bittersweet Saga of the Sock-It-To-Me Girl.
