LOS ANGELES, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- ABC News' Elizabeth Vargas has checked into a rehab facility for alcohol addiction for the second time in less than a year.
The 51-year-old 20/20 anchor confirmed in a statement she returned to rehab Saturday while vacationing with her family in California.
"While on vacation this weekend, I decided to return to a recovery center," Vargas said.
"As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process. I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry. I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this trying time."
Vargas' last stint in a rehab facility came in November 2013, during which husband Marc Cohn allegedly cheated on her, prompting their now ongoing divorce. Cohn is best known for his 1991 soft rock hit "Walking In Memphis" and beating out Boyz II Men, C+C Music Factory, Color Me Badd, and Seal for the 1992 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
After returning from rehab in January, Vargas spoke candidly with George Stephanopoulos about her addiction and the toll it took on her.
"I am an alcoholic," Vargas told Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America in January.
"It took me a long time to admit that to myself. It took me a long time to admit it to my family, but I am. The amount of energy I expended keeping that secret and keeping this problem hidden from view was exhausting."
It is unclear if Vargas relapsed and requires detox treatment, or if she checked herself in as a precautionary measure. Her family has been on vacation since August 10.
