The legendary Spanish musician was a leader in the New Flamenco movement, and worked hard to share contemporary flamenco with mainstream audiences. He took part in many crossover collaborations with other guitarists, including Eric Clapton, John McLaughlin, and Al Di Meola. As a guitarist, de Lucia was well-known for his depth of expression, remarkable dexterity, and speed of execution.
De Lucia was playing with his family on a Cancun, Mexico beach Tuesday when he suddenly fell ill, and died on the way to the hospital. The cause of death appears to have been a heart attack, according to Miguel Nunez, a spokesman for the guitarist's hometown in Algeciras, Spain.
