LONDON, May 3 (UPI) -- British royal couple William and Kate spent their first wedding anniversary at The Crown Inn in rural Westleton, England, witnesses said.

Staff at the small 12th century country hotel told The Daily Telegraph the duke and duchess of Cambridge "wanted to be treated just like everybody else" and joined other guests in the dining room for a breakfast of bacon and eggs last weekend.

The newspaper reported Thursday the couple had been in the area for the wedding of Hannah Gillingham, one of Kate's best friends from school, and her new husband, Robert Carter.

"We were made aware that some special guests were arriving but we didn't know just how special," general manager Gareth Clarke told the Telegraph.

"It was a lovely family occasion with a relaxed atmosphere and they both seemed really happy to be in a comfortable environment with friends," Clarke said. "William and Kate pitched up at about 1 a.m. and enjoyed a drink at the bar before retiring to the Swan room for the night. They both ate a cooked breakfast of bacon and eggs before they left in the morning. They're the first royalty we've had staying with us. It's not every day you welcome the second in line to the throne."

The Telegraph said the couple left the inn Sunday and headed home for a quiet dinner to celebrate their anniversary. William and Kate were married in a lavish ceremony in London April 29, 2011.
