Case won't weigh on alleged Mel audio

LOS ANGELES, July 27 (UPI) -- Audio leaked on the Web purportedly of heated fights between Mel Gibson and his ex-girlfriend aren't the focus of a police probe of the Hollywood actor.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating Oksana Grigorieva's allegations that Gibson assaulted her and put their infant daughter in danger.

Several salacious audio clips have hit the Internet in recent weeks with a voice sounding like Gibson's making menacing and racist comments to Grigorieva.

Gibson has not commented on the content of the clips other than to say his former girlfriend tried to extort money from him in exchange for keeping conversations between them quiet.

Law-enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times the police investigation into Gibson's alleged abusive behavior is concentrating on physical evidence, witness testimony and text messages, not the unsubstantiated audio clips.

"We are the caboose in a celebrity scandal," one law enforcement official told the Times. "But our job isn't to speculate or deal in rumors, but to get the bottom of whether a crime occurred."
