'Brighton Beach' Broadway show closing

NEW YORK, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- An executive with a Broadway production of "Brighton Beach Memoirs" said the New York show is closing after a lackluster run.

The unidentified executive said the final performance of the Broadway production of playwright Neil Simon's work was scheduled for Sunday after its eight preview performances only grossed nearly $124,000, The New York Times reported.

The executive said "Brighton Beach" lead producer Emanuel Azenberg decided to close the production amid concerns of spending his and investors' money on the stage production.

With the lack of success of "Brighton Beach" on Broadway, plans to open a companion production of "Broadway Bound" have been shelved. "Broadway," also from Simon, was scheduled to open in several weeks.

The Times said both the Broadway production of "Brighton Beach" and "Broadway Bound" were being directed by David Cromer.
