STURGIS, S.D., Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler was hospitalized after falling off the stage during a performance in South Dakota, concert officials said.

Tyler, 61, fell while entertaining the crowd at the 69th Anniversary Sturgis Rally of motorcycle enthusiasts after the sound system failed during "Love in an Elevator," the Rapid City (S.D.) Journal reported Thursday.

Mike Sanborn, spokesman for the Buffalo Chip Campground, where the rock group was performing, said Tyler was helped backstage after the fall, then flown to an area hospital after an on-site evaluation.

Tyler sustained injuries to his head, neck and shoulder, but it wasn't immediately known how serious they were, the newspaper said.

Aerosmith fan Lance Yellow Robe from Rapid City told the Journal he was stunned by the fall that abbreviated the band's performance.

"I've never seen that happen before," he said. "But you could kind of see it coming because he was dancing all over the stage."

Yellow Robe said Tyler was trying entertaining the crowd after the sound system went silent by dancing around on a catwalk portion of the stage. Tyler spun, moved backward then fell off the stage.
