LOS ANGELES, May 18 (UPI) -- Dolla's publicist said the Atlanta rapper was fatally shot in the head Monday afternoon in the parking lot of the Beverly Center mall in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Times said the 21-year-old performer flew to California earlier in the day to work on his first album, which was expected to drop this summer via the Jive Records label. He had previously recorded several singles.
Dolla, whose real name is Roderick Anthony Burton II, was gunned down while he and rapper D.J. Shabbazz waited in the valet area of the parking structure of the mall where the hip-hop artists had been shopping, Burton's publicist Sue Vannasing told the Times.
Police told the newspaper two suspects fled the scene and a "person of interest" was later detained as he attempted to board a flight out of Los Angeles International Airport.
