'Springtime for Hitler' comes to Berlin

BERLIN, May 16 (UPI) -- "The Producers," a musical about a musical named "Springtime for Hitler," is finally opening in Hitler's capital, Berlin.

The show has already attracted notice because of its promotional campaign, featuring red flags bearing black pretzels and sausages, Der Spiegel reported. The swastika flag actually used by the Nazis is now illegal in Germany.

The musical based on a 1969 movie opened in New York eight years ago. The story features two producers who decide to produce a sure-fire flop, allowing them to sell the show to backers several times over and then pocket the money. Their scheme goes awry when the show, written by an aging Nazi enthusiast, becomes a hit.

The audience at a public preview Friday at the Admiralspalast Theater was enthusiastic, giving the show standing ovations. That was especially true of the big number, "Springtime for Hitler," featuring Nazi-uniformed showgirls.
