NEW YORK, April 3 (UPI) -- John Stamos, Gina Gershon and Bill Irwin are set to star in the Broadway revival of the musical "Bye Bye Birdie," the Roundabout Theatre Company said.

The 1960-set rock 'n' roll musical comedy is to open this fall and play a limited engagement, 48 years after the original Broadway production debuted.

Stamos will play Albert, Gershon will portray Rosie and Irwin will play Harry in the production, which is being directed and choreographed by Robert Longbottom.

The musical's book is by Michael Stewart, its lyrics are by Lee Adams and the music is by Charles Strouse.

Additional creative members and citizens of Sweet Apple, Ohio, will be announced shortly, the Roundabout said.

"It's 1960 and hip-swingin' teen idol superstar Conrad Birdie has been drafted into the army," the company said in a news release. "Birdie's manager Albert and his secretary Rosie have cooked up a plan to send him off with a swell new song and one last kiss from a lucky teenage fan on 'The Ed Sullivan Show!'"
