Starring Christian Bale, the late Heath Ledger, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine, "The Dark Knight" has been No. 1 at the U.S. box office for the past three weeks.

Variety.com noted it took the 2004 film "Shrek 2" 43 days to reach the $400 million milestone.

The highest grossing film of all time is the epic period romance-action film, "Titanic," which earned $600.8 million at the domestic box office, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.
