Ferrell's 'Semi-Pro' opens at No. 1

LOS ANGELES, March 2 (UPI) -- Will Ferrell showed his drawing power, carrying "Semi-Pro" to No. 1 in U.S. theaters in its opening weekend, it was reported Sunday.

The comedy about a pro basketball team recorded $15.2 million in estimated ticket sales in its debut weekend, Box Office Mojo reported. That overtook last week's top-ranked movie, "Vantage Point," which fell to No. 2 with $13 million in estimated sales, followed by "The Spiderwick Chronicles" at No. 3 with $8.75 million.

Scarlett Johansson's "The Other Boleyn Girl" opened at No. 4 with $8.3 million, followed by "Jumper," down from third last week with $7.6 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were "Step Up 2 the Streets," $5.71 million; "Fool's Gold," $4.69 million; "Penelope," another new romantic comedy starring Christina Ricci at $4.01 million; "No Country for Old Men," which experienced a post-Oscars boost from 12th to ninth at $4 million; and "Juno," another Oscar-winner in its 13th week at $3.35 million.

Dropping out of the top tier were "Definitely, Maybe," "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins," "Be Kind, Rewind" and "There Will Be Blood."
