LOS ANGELES, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- This weekend brought a flurry of new movies to U.S. theaters with "Meet the Spartans" and "Rambo" grabbing the top two spots.
"Spartans," a spoof starring Carmen Electra, carded $18.73 million in estimated ticket sales in its opening weekend, while "Rambo," the latest installment in Sylvester Stallone's Vietnam veteran action vehicle, was right behind at $18.15 million, Box Office Mojo reported Sunday.
"27 Dresses" showed some slippage, moving to No. 3 with $13.6 million in estimated receipts, followed by last week's top movie," Cloverfield," with $12.7 million. Another new movie, "Untraceable," a crime thriller starring Diane Lane and Billy Burke, drew $11.2 million.
Filling out the Top 10 were "Juno," $10.3 million in its eighth week; "The Bucket List," $10.21 million; "There Will Be Blood," up from No. 11 with $4.89 million; "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," $4.66 million; and "Mad Money," $4.61 million.
Bowing out of the top tier were "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Atonement," "First Sunday" and "I Am Legend."
Yet another debut film, the Tre Armstrong drama "How She Move," tallied $4.16 million, good for 12th place.
