Cruise was praised at a ceremony in Dusseldorf for the bravery he displays in his film choices.

The prize committee also lauded the actor for bringing this story Hollywood has not told before to the big screen, the BBC said Friday.

Germany's most prestigious media awards, the Bambis recognize achievements in film, television and music.

U.S. actress Eva Longoria also won an award in the "TV series international" category.

"I am totally amazed and blown away, every time I get outside of America, how popular 'Desperate Housewives' is," she told reporters. "For me, to be here to accept this award and be in Germany and in an international community, it's an honor for me."

Italian actress Sophia Loren received a lifetime achievement award at the event, as well.
