Spanish library reeling from theft of maps

MADRID, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- The theft of two centuries-old maps from the National Library of Spain has resulted in a police probe and the resignation of the library's head this week.

Rosa Regas resigned her position at the library following the theft of two rare 1482 editions of Ptolemy’s Cosmographia, but paired her resignation with a slew of accusations, The Times of London said Saturday.

Regas, a writer, alleged the media and Spanish Culture Minister Cesar Antonio Molina purposefully smeared her reputation since the theft.

"They would not have dared do this to a man,” she said. “Whatever a woman does is always wrong."

The main suspect in the theft of the maps, which are said to be worth $100,000 each, is an Argentinian researcher who recently left the country.

The British newspaper said that along with the maps, several pages from books dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries also are missing.
