'Utopia' wins big at Drama Desks

NEW YORK, May 21 (UPI) -- Tom Stoppard's trilogy "The Coast of Utopia" won seven honors, including outstanding drama, at the 2006-07 Drama Desk Awards at Lincoln Center in New York.

"Spring Awakening," the Duncan Sheik-Steve Sater rock musical adapted from an 1891 Frank Wedekind play, won four awards, including outstanding musical during Sunday's presentation, the organization said in a news release.

Named outstanding revival was "Company," the Stephen Sondheim and George Furth musical that won a total of three prizes. R. C. Sherriff's 1929 play "Journey's End," set in World War I, was named outstanding revival of a play as one of its three honors.

Directing honors for a play and a musical went to Jack O'Brien for "The Coast of Utopia" and Michael Mayer for "Spring Awakening," respectively.

Frank Langella of "Frost/Nixon" and Eve Best of "A Moon for the Misbegotten" were named best actor and actress in a play. On the musical side, actresses Audra McDonald of "110 in the Shade" and Donna Murphy of "LoveMusik" tied for the top honor. Raul Esparza of "Company" was named outstanding actor in a musical.
