Genesis latest group to reunite, tour

LONDON, March 8 (UPI) -- Genesis is the latest band to announce a reunion tour, joining The Police, Smashing Pumpkins and others traipsing across the United States and abroad.

Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford -- The British band's core in the late 1970s and early 1980s -- will kick off a 13-city North American tour Sept. 7 in Toronto after a summer tour in Europe, USA Today said Thursday.

As with The Police, Genesis will emphasize the band's play list, rather than individual members' solo hits.

"There was too much Genesis material," Banks said.

But can the reunion tours -- which include Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, The Stooges and Crowded House -- turn interest into sellout?

"There doesn't appear to be any downward pressure on ticket prices, so there's no reason not to expect '07 to gross at least as much money as last year," Pollstar Editor in Chief Gary Bongiovanni said.

Plus, Bongiovanni and others said, groups like The Police and Genesis bring a well-known catalog of songs to the arena.

"People are feeling less adventurous these days," Rolling Stone contributing editor Anthony DeCurtis said. "They want to know what they're going to get."
