Grammys honor Baez, Booker T, the Doors

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- This year's Grammy Awards in Los Angeles presented lifetime achievement honors to several recording artists, including Joan Baez and The Doors.

At an event Saturday, Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Baez, an influential folk singer; and The Doors, a seminal classic rock band. The Recording Academy also presented lifetime awards to the Memphis R&B group Booker T. & The MG's, prima donna Maria Callas, jazz innovator Ornette Coleman, jam band pioneers the Grateful Dead, and Western swing great Bob Wills.

The Recording Academy presented Trustees Awards to Estelle Axton, a co-founder of Stax records; Cosimo Matassa, considered an architect of New Orleans' R&B, rock and soul for his work as a recording engineer and studio owner; and Stephen Sondheim, Broadway composer and lyricist.

Technical Grammy Awards were presented to David M. Smith, an innovator in high-resolution audio and digital recording, and the Yamaha Corp. of America.
