Italian show honoring 'Pinocchio' creator

FLORENCE, Italy, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- A new art exhibition in Florence, Italy, is celebrating the 180th anniversary of the birth of Carlo Collodi, the creative force behind "Pinocchio."

The exhibition is focused on original artwork related to Collodi's first illustrated volume of "The Adventures of Pinocchio" from 1883, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

Entitled "Once Upon a Time There Was Pinocchio," the art show will feature several other rare editions of the literary tale about the puppet whose nose grows as he lies.

Since Collodi created the concept of Pinocchio in 1881 and sent his initial related short story to the Italian newspaper Giornale per i Bambini, the fictional tale has expanded internationally and has been translated into more than 260 languages.

The story, which Collodi initially titled the "Story of a Puppet," has also been the subject of several films including Walt Disney's 1940 animated classic.

"Once Upon a Time" concludes its run at Florence's Palazzo Pitti Modern Art Gallery March 25, ANSA said.
