LOS ANGELES, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- The controversial book by O.J. Simpson, "If I Did It," was thrown out by its publisher but was reportedly offered for sale on eBay and other Web sites.
Alibris.com and Biblio.com both took listings for the book off of their sites Friday after it was offered at prices up to $5,499, USA Today reported Tuesday. The auction site eBay also removed at least eight listings of the book, with one of the undetected listings selling for $50.
Alibris Chief Executive Officer Martin Manley told USA Today, "It's a disgusting book and we don't want to sell it," even if "people may have a right to sell it." He added that he was not aware that the book was listed on Alibris.com until a reporter called.
Catherine England, a spokeswoman for eBay, cited policies aimed at offensive items and "murderabilia."
"Out of respect for murder victims, eBay may remove items closely associated with murder cases dating over the last 100 years," she told the newspaper. "We reached out to the publisher who holds the copyright; they said they did not intend to distribute this book."
