Turner's 'Rigi' paintings to be displayed

LONDON, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Three major works by English watercolorist John M.W. Turner will be displayed together for the first time in London this winter.

The trio of watercolors is made up of "Blue Rigi," "Red Rigi" and "Dark Rigi," a priceless collection from the 1840s showing the Rigi mountain in Switzerland. The works will be exhibited at the Tate Britain museum Jan. 22-March 25.

The paintings are credited with inspiring the French Impressionists of the late 19th Century. They are owned by different museums and private collectors.

An anonymous bidder paid 5.8 million pounds ($11.4 million) for "Blue Rigi" at an auction in June.

The exhibition is part of a fundraising campaign by the Tate to buy back the "Blue Rigi" and keep it in Great Britain, the BBC reported.
