Winslet prefers to dress down for roles

NEW YORK, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- British actress Kate Winslet says she prefers roles that don't require her to be the "glamorous chick."

In her new film, "Little Children," Winslet plays a harried young mother who doesn't spend a tremendous amount of time primping.

"It was really fun to play somebody who was not supposed to look great," she said. "I loved that. I much prefer playing characters who look kind of ugly and have unkempt hair and very strange clothing. I absolutely love that. I'd much prefer to do that than play the kind of glamorous chick. I was in heaven. I was like, 'Let's make her look REALLY bad!'"

While Winslet said she is eager to let her own two real-life children play and be who they are, she admits she can also slightly relate to a mother in "Little Children" who is a "ridiculously obsessive, time-keeping freak."

"Being a parent is absolutely the most extraordinary gift in the world and, at the same time, it is chaotic," she said. "It is crazy. There is a lot of juggling going on there. I'm always like the sweatiest, hottest mother on the schoolground. I mean temperature 'hot.'"
