LONDON, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Princess Diana of Wales's butler has divulged a "final" secret regarding the Princess's 1997 death in a Paris car crash.

The news, reported by Britain's The Independent newspaper, comes as Britain's most senior woman judge was named to preside over investigations into Diana's death.

Diana's loyal aide Paul Burrell is claiming that at the time of her death, the gold, diamond-studded band the Princess was donning was not intended to symbolize an engagement between her and her lover Dodi Al Fayed. The ring, Burrell said in his new book, was worn on Diana's right hand and was meant to symbolize only friendship.

Burrell's book, titled "Diana, The Way We Were" says: "The world must stop believing Diana and Dodi were due to get married because that is simply not true."

The account contradicts the popular belief trumpeted by Dodi's father that the two were deeply in love.
