Documentary explores Superman myth

NEW YORK, June 21 (UPI) -- With the film "Superman Returns" due out soon in U.S. theaters, a TV documentary has been made that explores the Superman myth.

The National Geographic Channel's "The Science of Superman" will focus on the scientific possibilities behind the fictional hero's superhuman abilities, the New York Post reported.

The documentary will include theories -- including one that Superman's ability to fly could be caused by his ability to manipulate magnetic waves.

"The biggest challenge here was to take something that's fiction and try and build some scientific fact around it," Michael Cascio -- National Geographic Channel senior vice president for production -- told the Post. "I mean, come on, he's a fictional character. There's an inherent disconnect when you say 'The Science of Superman,' but in some instances there are scientific principles at work here -- and where there aren't, we come up with ideas of what it would take to make that (super power) happen."

The documentary is scheduled to air on June 29.
