Zankel donates $120M, $22M to Carnegie

NEW YORK, June 3 (UPI) -- A New York investor and philanthropist has willed most of his estate to charities, including $22 million to Carnegie Hall and millions to other non-profits.

Arthur Zankel's name already lines Zankel Hall at Carnegie because of past endowments, and his will funds years of performances and educational programs with Carnegie's second largest gift.

The New York Times reports Zankel split about $120 million between Carnegie and others like Columbia University's Teachers College, the UJA-Federation of New York and the Society of Illustrators.

He gave $42 million to Skidmore College, which he said helped redirect the lives of his two sons.

Zankel committed suicide in 2005 after a battle with depression.

From 1979 to 1997 he served as partner at First Manhattan Company. He also founded High Rise Capital Management and served on the board of Citicorp.

His brother, Martin Zankel, is the executor of the will. Martin said his brother divided up his wealth in 2003, giving a sizable amount to his sons but mostly to charities and non-profits.
