Longtime Marley bassist loses royalty suit

LONDON, May 15 (UPI) -- London's High Court has rejected a claim from Bob Marley's bassist for millions of dollars in unpaid royalties.

Aston Barrett, 60, who played with Marley from 1969 until the reggae icon's death in 1981, sought 60 million pounds ($112.7 million) from Island records and the Marley estate, the BBC reported.

Barrett, who has 52 children, claimed Marley promised each member of his band, The Wailers, equal shares of royalties from all the albums they recorded together.

However, the court ruled Barrett gave up his rights to royalties in a 1994 settlement with Island records. In that case filed in New York, Barrett accepted a $500,000 payment from Island Records, which also paid his legal costs.

Marley's family released a statement hailing the decision.

"For the last four years, Aston Barrett has persisted in this hurtful and extremely expensive claim which was actually settled in 1994," Marley's family said in a statement. "The family of Bob Marley is delighted that the claim has now been rejected in full."
