Sen. Ted Kennedy writes a kids' book

NEW YORK, N.Y., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., has written a book aimed at helping children understand how government works.

"My Senator and Me: A Dog's-Eye View of Washington, D.C.," is illustrated by Cadldecott-winning artist David Small and will be published in May, Scholastic said in a news release Monday.

The 56-page picture book follows Kennedy's Portuguese Water Dog, Champion Amigo's Seventh Wave or "Splash," as he spends a day in the Senate.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to create a book for young readers and their families that will deepen their understanding of how our American government works," Kennedy said in the release.

Kennedy said he will donate any money he makes from the book to charity. One group that will benefit is Read Boston, which supports literacy in the Boston public schools, he said.
