Joan Baez plays concert near Bush ranch

CRAWFORD, Texas, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- More than 500 people gathered near President Bush's Crawford, Texas, ranch for a musical protest by folk singer and peace activist Joan Baez.

Baez sang Sunday night in support of Cindy Sheehan, who had vowed to camp near Bush's ranch until he tells her why her son died in the Iraq war.

Sheehan had to leave for California last week after her mother suffered a stroke.

Before the concert, Baez met with parents who lost their children in Iraq, the Waco (Texas) Tribune-Herald reported Monday. Baez said she came to Crawford to support Sheehan's cause and the other military parents grieving for their fallen children.

Baez performed spirituals and protest songs of the '60s including "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "Song of Peace."
