Goulet to star in 'La Cage aux Folles'

NEW YORK, March 30 (UPI) -- Musical comedy star Robert Goulet will take over the lead role of Georges in the current Broadway revival of Jerry Herman's "La Cage aux Folles."

Goulet, who made his Broadway debut 45 years ago, will assume the role in mid-April as a replacement for Daniel Davis, it was announced Tuesday.

Davis played his last Georges at the Marquis Theater last Sunday and has been replaced by his understudy, John Hillner, until Goulet assumes the role. Davis reportedly left the show because of discord between him and other members of the cast, but this could not immediately be confirmed.

Goulet became a star when he played Sir Lancelot in "Camelot" opposite Richard Burton and Julie Andrews in 1960 and won a Tony Award as best actor in a musical for his performance in John Kander and Fred Ebb's "The Happy Time" in 1968. His most recent Broadway outings have been in a 1993 revival of "Camelot" in "Moon Over Buffalo" in 1995.
