Spider-Man creator wins Marvel comic suit

NEW YORK, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- A New York judge says Spider-Man creator Stan Lee is entitled to 10 percent of the profits from movies and toys based on the superheroes he created.

U.S. District Judge Robert Sweet's ruling comes in a lawsuit filed by the 82-year-old Lee, who sued Marvel Comics in 2002, claiming the company breached his 1998 contract to act as a spokesman for the comic book giant and was cheating him of millions from its Hollywood ventures.

Among Lee's other characters are the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four.

The judge agreed with Lee and told Marvel it must pay him a tenth of any profit it makes from movies, TV shows or products made by its toy division.

Since the company has raked in hundreds of millions worldwide marketing Spider-Man alone, Lee stands to become wealthy.

Marvel says it will appeal.
