Lawrence Welk draws top PBS ratings

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Reruns of the "Lawrence Welk Show," U.S. TV's top rated syndicated program, draw more viewers than shows airing at the same time on MTV, VH1 and BET.

The reruns beat the popular cable music outlets on Saturday nights when Welk's variety show airs on 279 public TV stations, the New York Times reported Tuesday.

"The Lawrence Welk Show" left commercial TV 20 years ago, but found an audience on public TV.

Each year, living cast members -- Welk died 12 years ago -- produce a TV special that ranks among the top fundraisers for PBS, earning more than $30 million since 1987.

Performances at the Welk Resort Champagne Theater in Branson, Mo., where live performances of Welk shows are staged, continue to draw fans.

Even with the diehard fans, the Branson theater is preparing to replace the show after this season.

"It's been 11 years. We need something that will draw a broader audience for a long run," said Larry Welk, the band leader's son who oversees the business.
