Queen Latifa in home video deal

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Queen Latifah has struck a deal with Paramount Home Entertainment to produce urban films with multimillion dollar budgets, Daily Variety said Tuesday.

The Oscar-nominated star's production company, Flavor Unit Films, will produce the films for the DVD market. Plans call for Flavor Unit to turn out romantic and urban comeides as well as dramas and action movies.

Variety said the deal continues Hollywood's aggressive move toward turning out projects specifically for DVD premiere.

The deal does not call for Latifah to appear in any of the DVDs produced for Paramount, but it does allow for theatrical release of projects for which Paramount covers production budgets of less than $5 million.

Flavor Unit's current production, "The Cookout," was produced as a DVD premiere movie for Lions Gate, said Variety, but the company decided to release it on 1,300 movie screens instead.
