LOS ANGELES, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series at the 56th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday.
The Comedy Central series -- which has developed a reputation as one of the sharpest political commentary shows on TV -- also won for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program.

Stewart was nominated for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program, but did not win. That trophy went to Elaine Stritch for her HBO show, "Elaine Stritch: At Liberty."
