Johnny Cash auction brings in $4 million

NEW YORK, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Fans paid almost $4 million for memorabilia from the estate of Johnny Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash at an auction in New York.

That was about twice the pre-auction estimate by Sotheby's.

The largest bid, $160,000, was for a Grammy award, followed by $110,000 each for two guitars. Those were well above Sotheby's expectations.

Another buyer put up $65,000 for a walking stick.

Some items, on the other hand, went for surprisingly modest prices. Sotheby's Senior Vice President Lee Dunbar told the Nashville Tennessean that the buyer who paid $12,000 for a notebook of Johnny Cash's song lyrics from the 1950s has probably made a good investment.

Johnny Cash began making arrangements for the auction before his death earlier this year, saying that he wanted to rid his house of clutter and to help his children pay estate taxes.
